GRAPHIC DESIGN SHOW X TELL X TALK
CEASE DECEASE I was chosen to take part in a collaborative project with students from Augsberg University in Germany. The brief was based on researching and creating a system of symbols for one of the four immortality narratives explored in Stephen Cave’s book ‘Immortality’. The narrative I was assigned was ‘resurrection’ and my symbols take inspiration from the dark practice of Necromancy, the art of raising and communicating with the dead. I discovered a necromantic spell and illustrated its steps taking into consideration the location, incantation, materials and phase of the moon needed to achieve the desired result of the conjuration.
FINAL OUTCOME
The final outcome for the project was to create a 3D object, or ‘memento mori’ which embodies the theme of your symbols. I chose to make a small pocket sized book that could be kept on the user at all times for those emergency reanimations. Because the spell requires the sacrifice of a large animal, I screen printed the content on to goat vellum parchment and bound the book in animal skin.
